Are Calif. tribes willing to oppose Schwarzenegger?
Tuesday, August 12, 2003

Tribes in California certainly have the financial means to support a candidate of their choice in the October 7 recall election. But do they want to?

That's the question posed by a former Republican consultant. "I don't know if they want to be known as the main special interest that opposed Arnold, if he wins," Tony Quinn tells The Sacramento Bee.

According to news sources, tribes have discussed contributing upwards of $10 million to support Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (D), who has been a champion of tribal rights. A spokesperson for one gaming tribe said a final decision had not been made to form an independent political committee.

Schwarzenegger is running as a Republican.
