Editorial: Tribe, BIA should be business friendly
Wednesday, August 13, 2003

The Navajo Nation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs "continue to stand in the way of economic development" on the reservation, The Farmington Daily Times says in an editorial.

The paper suggests the tribe and the BIA set aside "privatization zones" in order to sell land for commercial development. "The Navajo Nation, with 40 to 50 percent unemployment and an annual average individual income of $6,500 can't afford to wait," the paper says.

The paper says there are too many levels of review for businesss owners. "Why is it necessary for the Bureau of Indian Affairs to have to review the leases after the tribe has already approved it?"
