Column: Wis. tribe owes $50K in hotel taxes
Thursday, August 14, 2003

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe of Wisconsin has been asked to pay $50,000 in unpaid hotel taxes, Cary Spivak & Dan Bice report in The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Under state law, local government officials are exempt from paying the 5 percent sales tax on hotel stays if they are on official business. But according to the state's tax administrator, tribal officials don't qualify as local government officials.

The taxes were allegedly incurred at the Hospitality Inn, where tribal leaders frequently stay.
