Native sheriff in N.M. accused of bias by foes
Friday, August 15, 2003

The McKinley County sheriff's department in New Mexico has cleared sheriff Felix Begay, a member of the Navajo Nation, of bias allegations.

The case is being forwarded to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an independent federal agency, for further action. Seven sheriff deputies filed EEOC complaints against Begay, whom they claim wants to get rid of all Anglo and Hispanic people at the department.

The sheriff's department is standing behind Begay. An attorney who reviewed the claims noted that some were filed by people who ran against Begay in a 2001 election or affiliated with those who ran against him.
