Friday, August 15, 2003

Cherokee Nation principal chief Chad Smith was sworn in for another term on Thursday.

Smith won re-election in May. His new deputy chief is Joe Grayson.

A group of Cherokee Freedmen, descendants of Africans who were made members of the tribe by a post-Civil War treaty, are suing the federal government because they were not allowed to vote in the election.
