Federal Register: Native Hawaiian repatriation
Wednesday, August 20, 2003

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee is recommending that a Native Hawaiian group dig up 83 ancestral items.

A notice published in today's Federal Register states that the process in which the items were repatriated was "flawed and remains incomplete." The committee says the Bishop Museum should retake possession until further consultation with other Native Hawaiian groups can occur.

The items were stolen from a cave in 1905 and ended up in the museum's possession. In February 2000, they were repatriated to the Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, a Native Hawaiian group that reburied them in a cave.
