Nez Perce tribal members charged with poaching
Thursday, August 21, 2003

Two members of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho, including a great-grandnephew of Chief Joseph, have been charged in state court with poaching elk for hunting out of season on private property.

Irving Curtis Watters, Sr., 76 and his son, Irving Curtis Watters, Jr., 37, plan to fight the charges. They say the 1855 Nez Perce Treaty protects their right to hunt ,even on non-Indian land.

Watters Sr. has faced similar charges before but the treaty issue has never been resolved.
