Indian Market Madness: Events and Happenings
Friday, August 22, 2003

What? You say you're not in Santa Fe this weekend for the annual Indian Market? Well you still have time to get there.

SCHEDULES
Today's Events (The Santa Fe New Mexican)
Gallery Openings and Other Happenings (The Santa Fe New Mexican)
Other Indian Market Events (The Santa Fe New Mexican)

ART
The big days, of course, are Saturday and Sunday. More than 1,000 artists representing about 100 tribes will exhibit their works on the downtown plaza. The prize-winning stuff sells quickly but you can always find quality works.

For those who are already in town, catch the Fifth Annual Contemporary Native American Art Show and Sale at the Institute of American Indian Arts museum this weekend View the works of IAIA alumni, one of the nation's tribal colleges.

FILM
2003 Native Cinema Showcase Schedule (NMAI)
The folks at the National Museum of the American Indian bring back the very successful Native Cinema Showcase. Everyone from Cherokee actor/musician Wes Studi to Canadian heartthrob Adam Beach will be there.

Tonight, "Cowboys and Indians: The J. J. Harper Story," a documentary about the shooting of a Canadian Native by a police officer will premiere. The film's producers and directors will attend the 7 p.m. screening.

At 7:45 p.m., Native America Calling host Harlan McKosato will emcee a Native variety show.

FASHION
Looking good takes talent too. On Friday, Swig (505.955.0400; 135 West Palace Avenue, Level Three) will host Native designers Pilar Agoyo and Virgil Ortiz as they display the latest in contemporary designs. The pair will also present a show Saturday night at Paramount Nightclub. Ortiz's work can currently be seen on several Donna Karan designs. Visit Ortiz's shop, Heat, located just off the plaza, for more.

MUSIC
What is an Indian event without music? During the market on Saturday and Sunday, you can catch performances on the main stage on the downtown plaza. Joanne Shenandoah, Clan/destine and Robert Mirabal are on the schedule.

On Saturday night, join Harlan McKosato for the annual Native Roots & Rhythms concert. Robert Mirabal headlines the all-star show.

Stroll on over to Paramount to even more music. Friday will feature Clan/destine, Mud Ponies and Star Nayea. On Sunday, Joanne Shenandoah will perform.
