Ponca tribal members protest chemical plant
Tuesday, August 26, 2003

Members of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and a labor union held a protest on Sunday against a company they say is polluting the environment.

Continental Carbon processes waste sludge from oil refineries to produce carbon black, a material used in tires and other plastic products. Tribal members say the substance is leaking near their homes and poses a health hazard. They are filing lawsuits against the company and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

The company contends a dispute with the labor union has motivated the protests.

The tribe is not a party to the litigation but supports the efforts of its members.
