Rape cases on Navajo Nation rise 40 percent
Monday, September 1, 2003

Rape cases on the Navajo Nation have risen 40 percent in the past three years, The Gallup Independent reports.

Tribal investigators spend 70 percent of their time on sex crimes, a tribal official says. "The problem affects all walks of life on the reservation, not just people in rural areas," Public Safety Division Director Samson Cowboy told the paper.

The tribe is starting a reservation-wide sex offender web site. People will be able to find out where registered offenders live.
