Wash. tribes worry about massive fishkill
Monday, September 1, 2003

Tribal biologists in Washington estimate that 23,000 salmon, including endangered species, died in a massive fishkill in the White River.

The source of the fishkill has been traced to a reduction of the river flows by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corp lowered the waters in order to allow a power company to perform some dam repairs.

The incident is under investigation but no action has been taken, according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The Puyallup Tribe and the Muckleshoot Tribe co-manage White River fisheries with the state. The tribes believe the fishkill has hurt their efforts to restore salmon to the river.
