Marker dedicated at Carlisle Indian School site
Monday, September 1, 2003

The state of Pennsylvania on Sunday dedicated a historical market at the site of the former Carlisle Indian Industrial School.

Descendants of students spoke at what was described as an emotional ceremony. Some recalled the harsh treatment their ancestors received for speaking Native languages but said they were thankful for the education and career training.

An estimated 10,000 students attended the school between 1879 and 1918. The school's last living graduate was Andrew Cuellar, who died last year shortly before turning 104.
