The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-9 along party lines to advance the nomination of Alabama attorney general William H. Pryor Jr. to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Democrats have questioned Pryor's truthfulness and have called for a review of whether he was misleading in confirmation testimony about fund-raising efforts. Republicans have turned the debate into one of religion, charging that Pryor is being blocked because he is Catholic.

Democrats are likely to filibuster Pryor on the Senate floor.
