Archaeologists uncover site of Mex. massacre
Tuesday, September 9, 2003

Archaeologists in Mexico believe they have uncovered the site of one of the last Indian massacres.

Fed up with oppression, Mayan Indians rose up against non-Indians and mixed-raced Indians in the mid- to late-1800s. According to historical accounts, the Mayans rounded up 250 women and children and some soldiers at a church in Bacalar, where they were killed.

Archaeologists working at the San Joaquin Church have found scattered bones at the site.
