White House renews call to open ANWR to drilling
Thursday, September 11, 2003

The Bush administration is pressing Congress to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

A letter from Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham called on lawmakers to approve development through the energy bill currently under consideration. Republicans support drilling but haven't been able to clear in in the Senate.

Republican leaders from the House and Senate are currently drafting the final version of the bill. Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), head of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said he won't include drilling if he can't guarantee 60 votes needed to overcome a potential filibuster.
