State wants a cap on tribal college's charter schools
Friday, September 12, 2003

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm wants to put a cap on the number of charter schools the Bay Mills Community College can open.

Since the college, which is based on the Bay Mills Reservation, serves Native Americans throughout the state, it can open as many charter schools as it wants. This school year, the college opened nine new facilities, which receive state aid but have more flexibility.

Granholm wants the tribal college included in the cap placed on universities. The universities have already hit their limit of 150 charter schools.
