Mich. wants same rules for Indian, non-Indian hunters
Wednesday, September 17, 2003

The state of Michigan is proposing Indian hunters follow the same rules at non-Indians.

Attorney General Mike Cox says a uniform system will prevent confrontations between Indians and non-Indians. He plans to ask a federal judge who approved a settlement between the state and tribes to consider the issue.

Currently, five tribes have set up their own regulations for hunting and fishing. The tribes successfully sued to enforce their rights under an 1836 treaty. An attorney for one tribe said Cox's request would be "perceived as a direct threat to tribal sovereignty," The Detroit Free Press reported.
