S.D. council approves study on Indian juveniles

The South Dakota Council of Juvenile Services on Wednesday approved a study to determine why American Indian juveniles are twice as likely to be arrested or incarcerated than whites.

Preliminary data shows that minority youth are more likely to be arrested, placed in secure detention or sentenced to juvenile corrections facilities.

According to the estate, 13.1 percent of the state's juvenile population is Indian. About 8 percent of the state's population is Native.
