GOP leadership resurrects ANWR drilling provision

Republican leaders on Monday circulated language that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

The language is identical to that passed by the House. Republicans are floating the provision to gauge support for development. Some Democrats say it could be a deal breaker if included in the energy legislation under debate.

Inupiat Eskimos who live in ANWR support drilling. They own 92,000 acres of surface and subsurface rights.

The Gwich'in Nation, which depends on caribou in ANWR, opposes development
