Calif. judge dismisses suit over burial ground
Wednesday, September 24, 2003

A judge in California dismissed a lawsuit a faction of the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians filed to stop construction of a school's athletic fields on a burial ground.

Upwards of 200 graves are believed to be located at the site. Without the knowledge of the rest of the tribe, the Junipero Serra High School worked with one tribal member to rebury some of the remains that were uncovered.

Other tribal members oppose the development. The tribe is not federally recognized.
