Alaska Native land swap bill draws opposition
Wednesday, September 24, 2003

A bill to swap 12,000 acres of land between the federal government and two Alaska Native corporations is drawing heated opposition in southeast Alaska.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) is sponsoring the bill. She held a public hearing on Saturday in Juneau, where opponents appeared to drown out supporters, The Anchorage Daily News reported.

Under the bill, the Sealaska and Cape Fox corporations would select 12,000 acres of forest land. They would give up forestland and mineral rights elsewhere.
