"In December 2000, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education intervened in the deliberative process UND President Charles Kupchella had set in motion to deal with this issue. At the time of the board's intervention, Kupchella had said that the sticking point for him was the officially registered objections of duly elected, sovereign tribal governments.

But the board did more than state that the nickname must be kept. It dictated a new, more offensive logo, clearly in the service of pursuing more dollars for Grand Forks, courtesy of what is now called Ralph Engelstad Arena Inc.

Because of the moral and ethical dimensions of this issue, it will continue to fester and erupt, embarrassing North Dakota, compromising its educational mission, and, ironically, depriving students and fans of an opportunity really to have the kinds of fun with a sports nickname that such names are supposed to provide."
