More tribal spending on Calif. recall disclosed
Friday, September 26, 2003

California tribes have reported spending nearly $3 million on the state's recall, records filed on Thursday show.

The Barona Band of Mission Indians spent $200,000 on a pro-Gov. Gray Davis (D) committee. The La Posta Band donated $50,000 to Davis, nine days after he signed a new gaming compact, and $5,000 to Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (D).

The First Americans for a Better California, an independent committee formed by the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians, spent $2 million. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians spent $850,200 on television advertising for State Sen. Tom McClintock, a Republican.

The disclosures put total tribal sending on the race at more than $6 million.

Campaign finance records can be found at http://cal-access.ss.ca.gov.
