Potawatomi descendants walking Trail of Death
Friday, September 26, 2003

Potawatomi tribal members are commemorating the Trail of Death, the 650-mile journey their ancestors were forced to walk in 1838.

About 900 Potawatomis were rounded up at gunpoint and forced to leave Indiana for Oklahoma. The walk took two months to complete. About 40 died along the way.

Today there are Potawatomi tribes in Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan and Wisconsin
