Hip-hop culture resonates for some Native youth
Monday, September 29, 2003

From clothes to music, Native youth in South Dakota are embracing hip-hop culture, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports.

Originally from the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, Gabe Night Shield is making a career of being a rapper. He puts an Indian perspective into his songs and says it is compatible with hip-hop. "Hip-hop is the culture of the youth," he says. "They can still be true to Lakota culture but then follow the hip-hop culture as well."

Warrior Society is a duo that promotes a positive message for Indian youth. "A lot of Indians try to be black. Why not be Indian?" says rapper Tyler White.

Native Era from the Pine Ridge Reservation often gets mistaken for a Christian rap group because their music is positive. But the duo aren't afraid of touching subjects like suicide and teenage pregnancy.
