"When the weather is great, as it was Sunday, I drive north through the middle of the state to where I meet U.S. Highway 2 at Devils Lake. When I pass Minnewaukan, N.D., I enter the land of Spirit Lake, as the Native people call it. Just past Minnewaukan, the roads are new and elevated. They cross the big lake several times.
I like the lake with all its idiosyncrasies. I don't want the lake to be artificially controlled with an outlet."
