Confusion reigns as Meskwaki takeover fails
Thursday, October 2, 2003
A security firm hired by the elected council of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa failed to retake the tribe's casino and tribal center on Wednesday.
According to news accounts, the security guards, some of them armed, showed up at 5:30 a.m. and caused some minor damage.
The elected council, headed by Alex Walker Jr., then told 1,100 employees to report to the casino.
But once the employees started showing up, they found that Walker and his group had already left the building. Supporters of the appointed council, headed by Homer Bear Jr., said they continue to control the tribal offices.
The local sheriff's department was called in and one sheriff said tribal members were trying to remove items from the casino.
