Editorial: Bush should settle trust fund case
Thursday, October 2, 2003

The Bush administration should settle the Indian trust fund case so that it doesn't 'drag on for another five or 10 years," The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial.

"We all know the Interior Department is at fault, and there's general agreement that some other agency needs to be in charge of the trust fund," the paper says.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ordered the department to account for all funds, dating back to 1887, in the Individual Indian Money (IIM) trust. He set a deadline of 2006 for most accounts and 2007 for the rest.

Lamberth will appoint a judicial monitor to oversee Interior and ruled that the duties of a common trustee apply to the government.
