Nickles, Oklahoma senator, announces retirement
Wednesday, October 8, 2003

Sen. Don Nickles (R-Okla.) announced his retirement from the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. He served four six-year terms.

The decision leaves Democrats eyeing the open seat. Rep. Brad Carson (D-Okla.), a member of the Cherokee Nation, is being urged to run. He was recently re-elected to his U.S. House seat.

Republicans who are reportedly interested include Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr (R). If he runs, Kelly Haney, a former state senator who is a member of the Seminole Nation, has said he will run for Istook's seat.

Kayln Free, a Democrat who is a member of the Choctaw Nation, told The Native American Times she will run for Caron's seat.
