Mashantucket members forming new political party
Wednesday, October 8, 2003

Some members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut are forming a new political party in hopes of making the tribe's government more accessible.

Leading the effort is Richard A. Skip Hayward, former chairman and current chairman of the tribe. Hayward's family and allies say the tribal leadership should be more inclusive of the diverse tribal membership.

The tribe is holding an election November 2 for three council seats. Chairman Michael J. Thomas is likely to seek re-election, The New London Day reports.
