Letter: Calif. tribes 'squander' good will
Friday, October 10, 2003
"By using their millions in an effort to unduly influence the election of another sovereign entity, the Indian tribes — with casino interests — managed to squander all of the good will and sympathy they'd built up for themselves over the years. In fact, they've engendered real hostility among many Californians, myself included. Twenty-eight states have Indian gaming, and 27 of them require profit sharing. Only one, California, does not. They gave Davis $1 million in campaign contributions and he gave them a 20-year monopoly on gaming in return.
Schwarzenegger said he was going to renegotiate that deal, and they spent $6 million trying to defeat him. It must make Davis feel plenty bad when he realizes how much more money he could have held out for when he cut the original deal. My wife, Elaine, came up with the perfect solution to this problem. If the tribes don't agree to renegotiate, our governor-elect should build tollbooths on public highways leading up to each casino. I'll bet if we start charging $5 to visitors every time they want to get in and out of these casinos, Indian gaming officials will be forced to rethink their position on the issue — post haste.
Davis shouldn't have to worry about what to do now that he's been unceremoniously dumped by the people. The Morongo Casino would probably hire him as a greeter."
