Tribes don't fear retaliation by Schwarzenegger

Even though rhetoric during the California recall was heated, some tribes don't think Arnold Schwarzenegger will treat them unfairly as governor.

Schwarzenegger wants to renegotiate compacts and can offer the tribe's more slot machines. Everything is on the table, his aides say.

Some tribes are willing to offer more revenues to the state for fewer restrictions on gaming. "Governor-elect Schwarzenegger was the only candidate in the campaign who said that he has no problem with urban Indian casinos as long as they pay their fair share," a lawyer for a tribe seeking a compact for an urban casino told The Sacramento Bee.

Tribes poured at least $10 million into the race. An attorney that represents several tribes said the campaign was a "dose of reality for tribes."

"There are limits to their power," attorney Howard Dickstein told the paper. "They cannot solve everything with the argument of tribal sovereignty, or prevail by huge gobs of money."
