Alaska governor pressured to approve land deal
Monday, October 13, 2003

Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski (R) is being pressured to approve a $10.4 million land and conservation deal that would benefit Alaska Native corporations.

Murkowski vetoed the project even though it won't require a penny of state funds. He objected because he doesn't think money from the Exxon Valdez oil spill should be used to by land from Alaska Natives.

Under the deal, the Exxon Valdez Trustee Council would buy 18,000 acres of land and purchase timber rights on 2,000 acres of Native-owned land on Afognak Island. Alaska Native corporations, state politicians, business groups and conservationists are supporting the arrangement.
