Schwarzenegger will have to work with tribes

In his first 100 days, Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) promised to renegotiate gaming compacts with tribes. The clock will soon start ticking.

Schwarzenegger said he wants tribes to share more revenues. He has pointed to Connecticut, where tribes share 25 percent of their slot revenues, as a model.

The tribes with casinos have 20-year compacts that were approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 2000. They are interested in raising the 2,000-per-tribe cap on slot machines.

The tribes I represent are business-oriented," tribal lawyer Howard Dickstein told The Los Angeles Times. "He is business-oriented. We're looking forward to it. I think things will work out well."
