S.D. residents celebrate Native American Day
Tuesday, October 14, 2003

The state of South Dakota didn't celebrate a certain European explorer on Monday. It was Native American Day instead.

In Sioux Falls, that means the annual Native American Day pow-wow. Held at the Multi-Cultural Center since 1998, the event drew hundreds of Indians and non-Indians.

In Rapid City, residents gathered for the 14th annual celebration at the Crazy Horse Memorial site. Martin Pin-a Red Bear, 26, was awarded the first Crazy Horse Memorial Educator of the Year Award for his contributions to Indian education. Red Bear, a coach and resource specialist at Rapid City Central High School, was given $1,000.
