Editorial: It's time for tribes to pay casino tax
Tuesday, October 14, 2003

California Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has pledged not to raise taxes but The San Diego Union-Tribune in an editorial says there's one he should raise.

"California currently ranks second in gaming revenues among all states," the paper says. "Meanwhile, the tribes are paying less than 2.8 percent of their take – about $140 million – into a pair of state-controlled funds. Most of the money went this year to small, nongaming reservations."

The paper says tribes "can play a positive role in helping to resolve California's fiscal crisis" by sharing more of their revenues. "The tribes squandered much of the good will they had with the public during the campaign by coming across as just another greedy special interest," the paper says.
