Editorial: Sakakawea a 'fine choice' for state
Friday, October 17, 2003

It took 100 years but Sakakawea is finally at home in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. "What a fine choice the state of North Dakota made for the second of its two statues," The Grand Forks Herald says in an editorial.

The paper recounts the Sakakawea's long journey to the hall. It began in 1905, when residents campaigned to place a statue of the only woman on the Lewis and Clark expedition in the state capitol.

Several decades later, another campaign led to the statue in the U.S. Capitol. And there was an unlikely donor -- the late Ralph Engelstad, the University of North Dakot alumnus famous for his defense of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname, gave $33,000 to help fund the latest replication of Sakakawea and her son.

"Thursday's unveiling in the U.S. Capitol happened only after 100 years of hard work," the paper says.
