Tribes urged to join homeland security task force
Wednesday, October 22, 2003

Tribes are being urged to join a task force on homeland security.

Thomas Heffelfinger, the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, said tribes need a seat on the advisory panel. Speaking to the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council yesterday, he said tribes play an important role in protecting America's lands.

According to the Associated Press, Heffelfinger voiced support for a measure that would treat tribal governments on the same level as states for purposes of homeland security funding. Currently, tribes cannot access funding directly and must ask for money from local governments.
