Pueblo woman always ready to seize opportunities

Hummingbird Flower was urged by her parents to get married, learn to cook and stay home. The San Ildefonso Pueblo woman heeded their advice, but also made her own education and career choices that have led her all the country.

Flower, whose English name is Lucille Calabaza, went to school in Los Angeles, where she earned earned a degree in business administration in human resources and accounting. But she didn't stay there for long, and she ended up working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband.

Flower soon moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she worked for the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET). At the urging of her husband, the couple moved back to the Pueblo, where she found herself launching a new career as a caterer.

Flower, 55, is now obtaining a master�s degree in social work and also owns a graphic-design business.
