Book tells of Eskimo mother's difficult choice
Friday, October 24, 2003

The Winter Walk is Loretta Outwater Cox's first book. It tells the true story of her grandmother's difficult decision to kill her newborn son.

Cox's grandmother, Qutuuq, lived during the late 1800s and early 1900s. During the winter of 1892, her husband died while the family was at a hunting and fishing camp. Lacking food, Qutuuq tried to lead her family back to their main village but soon went into labor.

Qutuuq gave birth to a healthy baby boy but decided to kill her son. The family eventually made it to safety, leading Cox to wonder how her grandmother viewed the choice she made.

Cox is Inupiaq Eskimo.
