N.M. lawmakers hear concerns of Navajo parents
Friday, October 24, 2003

The New Mexico Indian Affairs Subcommittee held a field hearing in Shiprock to discuss concerns of Navajo parents who say they are being excluded from decisions affecting education of their children.

The local school district's Indian Education Committee was disbanded and split it separate groups. Parents say the new structure gives them little input into the school.

Parents also object to statements by the school board president that bilingual education is not important.

About 92 percent of the 7,000 students in the Central Consolidated School District are Navajo, according to The Albuquerque Journal.
