Alaska Natives receive top honors at convention
Monday, October 27, 2003
The annual convention of Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) wrapped up on Saturday with an awards ceremony.
Herman Kitka Sr. received the Elder of the Year award for his dedication to subsistence hunting and fishing rights. Kitka is Tlingit from the village of Sitka.
AFN's Parents of the Year were Patty and Nadia Mullan. Business Owners of the Year
were Bob and Denise May, who run a lodge on Afognak Island.
The Ruby John Lifetime Achievement Award went to
Frank Ferguson, a state lawmaker and Native leader who died in June. Ferguson's family accepted the award.
Awards for culture, health and education were also handed out.
