Navajo Nation president blasts reprimand of AG
Tuesday, October 28, 2003

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. criticized the Navajo Nation council for reprimanding attorney general Louis Denetsosie.

The council was trying to oust Denetsosie but voted 40-37 to reprimand him instead. Delegates cited his failure to preserve a tribal agreement to control a school on the reservation that reverted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Shirley said the council didn't give Denetsosie a chance to defend himself. He pointed out that the vote came on Friday, the same day a federal appeals court reinstated the tribe's $600 million breach of trust case.
