Oneida Nation evictions highlight rift within tribe
Wednesday, October 29, 2003
The eviction of four families from the Oneida Nation in New York points to a much deeper dispute within the tribe.
The families object to the leadership of Ray Halbritter, recognized as the tribe's leader.
They say he was not chosen by traditional means through the clan system.
Halbritter has led the tribe into financial prominence. But the families say it has come at a cost. Speaking out against him leads to punishment, they say, and the demolition of their homes is only the latest act of retaliation.
The families were supposed to leave on Sunday but have been given more time by a tribal judge to sort out issues with the tribe, which has offered the families subsidized housing.
