White House supports anti-trust fund rider
Wednesday, October 29, 2003

The White House supports a provision delaying the court-ordered accounting of the Indian trust fund, a Congressional spokesperson told the Associated Press.

John Scofield, spokesman for the House Appropriations Committee, also said congressional leaders and Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate support the rider, inserted in the Department of Interior's $20 billion spending bill.

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) opposes the rider. As chairman of the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues, he says it threatens the entire bill, a spokesperson told the AP.

But Scofield discounted Pombo's opposition. "It's a lonely crusade," he told the AP.
