Senate Democrats block confirmation of judge
Friday, October 31, 2003

The Republican-controlled Senate failed to break a Democratic filibuster of one of President Bush's judicial picks.

Charles W. Pickering Sr., a federal judge in Mississippi, has been nominated to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. The court has been generally negative to tribes in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Pickering's nomination was rejected by the Senate over concerns about his civil rights record. He is a close friend of Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who resigned as majority leader last year over remarks he made that suggested segregation was good for America. Bush renominated Pickering anyway.
