BIA taking over tribe's child welfare program
Tuesday, November 4, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is moving forward with a takeover of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe's child welfare program.

The BIA and the tribe are fighting over control of the program. The BIA claims the tribe is unable to provide adequate services. The tribe's self-determination contract for the program expired yesterday.

A federal judge in Montana held a hearing to address the dispute. U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull denied the tribe's request to stop BIA from moving forward with the takeover and ordered the tribe to hand over records to the BIA.
