Norton welcomes time-out in Cobell trust fund case
Tuesday, November 4, 2003

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton said her department deliberately kept itself out of negotiations for an appropriations rider that delays the Indian trust fund lawsuit.

Norton said the White House worked directly with lawmakers on a $20 billion budget bill that was approved by the House last week and by the Senate last night. But she also said Interior officials provided information to Congress on the impact the case might have on the budget.

The House narrowly approved the budget bill on Thursday by a 215-206 vote. The Senate passed it 87-2.
