Pala Tribe restricts benefits to high school graduates
Tuesday, November 11, 2003

To encourage tribal youth to stay in school, the Pala Band of Mission Indians of California restricts its casino stipend to high school graduates only.

Gaming revenues provide full college scholarships for tribal members who stay in good standing. About 40 students now receive assistance, according to the director of the tribe's education programs.

The tribe also funds the Pala Learning Center on the reservation to help students stay in school. Students who are falling behind at the local public high school can make up work at the center.
