Colombia's last nomadic tribe faces extinction
Tuesday, November 11, 2003

Experts fear the Nukak Tribe of Colombia will disappear soon due to disease, war and other threats.

The nomadic tribe's population was estimated at 1,200 when members made contact with outsiders in 1988. Now their numbers have dwindled to about 380, according to the Colombia's Health Ministry.

Disease has killed off the tribe's elderly. Nearly half of the population is children.

The country's civil war has forced camps from traditional areas. Many are now learning Spanish and other Western ways.
